Strobist shots - my first steps...

Recently I took my first steps as a strobist.
This is what I did: I hung a bag of water over a little black plastic bath. With a needle I stuck a tiny hole in the bag so water drops started falling down.
Timing was everything as I wanted to capture the moment when the drop hit the water surface.
So far so good, everything went well for a first time.
After a while I started to think about how I could take this little experiment to the next level, because this had been done before.

I tried flashing on the second curtain instead of using regular flash light (maybe - most likely- someone has done this before aswell, but I've never seen it...)
Not only could I capture the drop hitting the surface, I could capture its 'soul'.

Just look at the following 2 pictures and you'll know what I mean ;-)

For these last 3 pics I placed a glass plate underneath the water surface to obtain a 'splash' effect.

All pics are taken with a Nikkor Macro 105mm.

Other than some background retouching (I noticed that my CCD was very dirty) and a little bit of sharpening at the end, nothing has been edited with Photoshop...

I know there's room for improvement (the front side of the splash isn't sharp) but I had fun doing this and that's important too, isn't it?

Folder - Petzl, klimgereedschap

Eigen ontwerp voor een folder van Petzl, een fabrikant van klimmateriaal.

Als de folder geplooid is heeft deze een vierkante vorm.

De eerste lay-out is de buitenkant.

De uiterste delen worden naar achter geplooid waardoor enkel de zwart/wit afbeeldingen te zien zijn (detail van een afdaalacht voor de geïnteresseerden).

Dit wordt dan nog eens in de helft geplooid zodat de witte afbeelding de voorkant vormt van de folder, de zwarte foto is de achterzijde.

Recto verso staat onderstaande afbeelding.

Door de opbouw van de lay-out en de plooiwijze ontstaat een folder met 'lagen'. Men wordt stap voor stap binnengeleid in de wereld van klimbenodigdheden.

- een eenvoudige voor- en achterzijde schrikt een leek niet meteen af om toch eens een kijkje te nemen in de binnenkant

- na 1x openplooien zie je 2 details van klimgereedschappen (een schroefkarabiner - het basisstuk van elke klimuitrusting, en een ijshouweel - een gespecialiseerd stuk gereedschap voor ijsklimmen)

- uiteindelijk komt men bij de binnenkant waar een greep uit het assortiment wordt voorgesteld (van een eenvoudige musketon naar een extreme ijshamer) samen met een tekst die wat sfeer schept (tekst is geleend van een bestaande Petzlfolder).

Ik hoop dat de bedoeling duidelijk is en ook zo overkomt!

De foto's van het materiaal heb ik gemaakt met een Sinar technische camera.

De landschappen zijn afkomstig uit Oostenrijk en Zwitserland en gefotografeerd met een analoge compactcamera (ja, ze dateren nog van voor het digitale tijdperk) :-)

Meteor strike, New York city

De bedoeling was om een zwaar, donker striptekeningachtig beeld te creëren.
Het resultaat is opgebouw uit volgende foto's:

Foto 1 is gebruikt als grondlaag (macro-opname van de hals van een fles plat water)
Op de druppels heb ik de ‘meteorieten’ gemaakt door eerst de druppels te selecteren (als basis voor de vorm). Feather van ongeveer 5 pixels.

Op een nieuwe laag heb ik de selectie dan gevuld met 50% grijs. Hier is dan ruis op aangebracht, daarna motion blur (hoek 45°, distance 120 px) en gaussian blur (ik denk 2 px).
Op deze wazige strepen heb ik dan Image > Adjustments > Treshold toegepast om de strepen wat grover en meer uitgesproken te maken (schuiven met de regelaar tot het gewenste resultaat bereikt is). Hierop dan terug de motion blur en gaussian blur.
Tenslotte heb ik wat gespeeld met de Blending modes en gekozen om Color Burn te gebruiken.

Hierop ligt dan foto 2 met een opacity van 25%.

Daar bovenop ligt foto 3. Ik heb het beeld wat aangepast qua grootte via Edit > Transform > Scale. De bovenste strook lucht heb ik weg gemaskeerd via een zwart-wit gradient in het masker.

Vervolgens zijn we bij de ‘explosie’ beland. Die is volledig gemaakt in photoshop. Door zodanig veel te proberen en opnieuw te beginnen moet ik de precieze beschrijving helaas schuldig blijven.

De laag boven de vlammen is terug foto 3. Via een masker heb enkel het linker deel (links van de boog) zichtbaar gehouden. Blending mode is hard light.

Tenslotte heb ik nog een laag toegevoegd die de fijne scheurtjes tonen.

Photoshop experiment

This image/self-portrait was created to express some of my frustrations...
I'm aware that there is a lot of room for improvement technically, such as the selection of the head and the cuts in the skin.
Three pictures have been used in this image: a normal self portrait, a picture of the sky and a picture of tree branches to create the vains in my skin.
Although this image isn't as perfect as I want it to be, I still want to share it with you. If you have any tips or trics to improve my PS skills, bring 'm on!!!!! (please) ;-)
Other similar images ar in progress, but I'll only put them online when I think they're good enough.
Hopefully you enjoy this preview...
